Rollin' Through The 60s Mini Interview Series Part 1 - Malicious AKA Leigh Kuilboer

To get you excited for Blue Tile Lounge's upcoming annual skateboard art exhibition Rollin' Through The 60s this Friday 22 Oct, we'll be running a series of mini artist profiles and interviews. First up is the very talented Malicious AKA Leigh Kuilboer.... enjoy!

MALICIOUS AKA LEIGH KUILBOER
Malicious is cars, babes, tattoo, comic & rockabilly shaken (not stirred) around in one f*#ked up individuals skull, then spilt, usually onto paper through ink. A graphic designer by day, Malicious AKA Leigh Kuilboer has a self described "healthy obsession with cars". Mainly working in black and white, Kuilboer creates a harsh contrasted point of view and setting to the ambiguous grey, shady and weird scenarios and ideals spewed forth.

If you had to choose, like end of the world, life or death scenario.... cars or babes?
NOOOO!!! You can't make me choose!! If I had one, I'd only long for the other. Cars and babes are so alike and share so many of the same characteristics, I don't think I could separate the two. But if I had to choose, I'd have to say... both. Thats an option right?

So a gentleman with a healthy obsession with cars, you must have at least one babin' ride?
Not nearly enough kick ass rides in my opinion. At the moment I have three cars, unfortunately only one of them is with-in the genre that I love so much, and its still a work in progress! So first up I have the 1950 Special DeLux Plymouth, which is in pieces. I'm tackling the, more then anticipated, rust that she came with. I was hoping to have it rolling for Kustom Nats early next year but the extent of the rust means I'm going to have to call in some extra help, so that time line has been blown well out.

The other two are imports, my deep dark secret guilty pleasure, a 1990 JDM Supra 2.5lt Twin Turbo (JZA70 - the model before the fast'n'furious jelly bean) and a 1996 Toyota Aristo 3lt Twin Turbo. The supra is in the shed coping a race spec head, custom inlet manifold and new big boy turbos (BIG hp), while the Aristo is the daily drive.

I've also been eyeing off '50s trucks lately, I REALLY wanna scratch build a Rat Truck, but we don't have the room, the car money 'allowance' is spread way too thin as it is and I think I'd get scalped if I came home with another car!

Word on the street is you've recently become a proud papa... can you tell us a little about the newest member of the Kuilboer clan and any impact becoming a father has had on your work?
Thats true! Lil Pheonix Happy Kuilboer (Pronounced: Kill Bore) rocked up in late August. While he's a cute lil bugger, I have to say tho he must also be part demon! When he's good its amazing and rewarding, when its not well... you get the gist! I guess we're still getting the grips of having him in our life. Not to sound like too much of a cliche but it does change nearly every thing.

I'd love to say that there hasn't been any impact on my work but that'd be a lie. As I write this 'Nix has just gone to sleep after screaming for 2+ hours. Stacey, my partner, is pretty amazing with him and even with her shouldering more then her fair share of looking after him its still made finding time to work challenging! I've learnt to sneak in a half hour to an hour here and there. I think its made me more efficient with the time that I do have because its so much more precious now!
