Rollin' Through The 60s Mini Interview Series Part 2 - Bendito Landero AKA Ben Lander

Next up in the Rollin Through The 60s mini interview series is the very talented pinstripe artist Bendito Landero.

BENDITO LANDERO AKA BEN LANDER
Making his first striping brush by cutting up an old artists paintbrush in his late teens, no surface would ever feel safe again. Every thing including the furniture became rapidly adorned in strange and wonderful symmetrical designs. Now in his 30s Ben Lander has turned his passion for art and all things old and automotive into a small but growing business striping and lettering cars and bikes from the back of his little matt black and heavily pinstriped wagon. His business also encapsulates a design studio from which all sorts of weird and wonderful things spring forth, including the likes of oil paintings, album cover and poster art. When not laying down lines Ben Lander can be found playing drums and singing in his band Macarburettors. Next on the Lander agenda will be to hit that road with brush in hand, see the world and stripe it.

Do you remember what the first thing was that you striped?
Yeah actually, it was a cupboard in my bedroom, I made the brush myself and used this blue paint, which mind you really didn't work. But I guess you could say that was the start of it all.

Would you have any advice for those wanting to get into pin striping?
Practice, practice, practice. I'm self taught myself, so practice was the only thing that helped me. Through my own experience though I have found that good paint is crucial, the most important part is being able to load up the brush nicely with a smooth consistency in the paint.

Are there any new art forms you'd like to explore?
Yeah, at the moment I'm actually experimenting with the idea of practical art, as apposed to just decorative. I'm playing around with building a heap of different objects like chairs that incorporate art in innovative, ergonomic, and I guess, practical forms.

Bendito Landero AKA Ben Lander will be one of the exhibiting artists in Blue Tile Lounge's annual Skateboard Art Exhibition 'Rollin Through The 60s' opening this Friday 22 October, 6pm.
